This calculator helps you formulate a balanced tallow soap recipe based on the cold process method. It calculates the precise amounts of oils, lye, and water needed for a batch. Use it to create custom soaps for personal use, gifts, or home management.
Tallow Soap Recipe Builder
Customize your batch size and superfat level
Enter the combined weight of all oils in grams.
Extra oil left unsaponified for moisturizing. 5-8% is standard.
Standard is 33-38%. Lower for faster unmold, higher for gentle trace.
Optional: Add scent load (usually 3% of oil weight).
Clay, oatmeal, or herbs. Optional bulk.
How to Use This Tool
Enter the total weight of tallow you plan to use in the first field. This is the base of your soap. Next, adjust the superfat percentage; a 5% superfat is standard for a balanced bar, while 8% adds extra moisturizing properties. Set your water percentage relative to the oil weight (38% is a safe starting point). Add optional fragrance or additive weights if desired. Click 'Calculate Recipe' to see your precise measurements. Use the 'Reset' button to clear all fields and start a new batch.
Formula and Logic
This calculator uses the saponification value (SAP) of beef tallow, which is approximately 0.140 for Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH). The formula for lye is: Total Oil Weight × SAP Value. To account for superfat (unsaponified oils), we subtract a percentage of the lye: Lye Needed × (Superfat % / 100). Water is calculated as a percentage of the total oil weight. The total batch weight is the sum of oil, water, lye, and any additives.
Practical Notes
- Measuring: Always use a digital scale for accuracy. Volume measurements (cups) are not reliable for soap making.
- Safety: Lye is caustic. Wear gloves and eye protection. Work in a well-ventilated area. Never pour water into lye (always lye into water).
- Curing: Tallow soaps need 4-6 weeks to cure. This hardens the bar and allows the pH to mellow.
- Temperatures: Melt your tallow and mix with lye water when both are around 100-120°F (38-49°C) for best results.
- Cost: Tallow is a cost-effective base. Buying lye in bulk reduces long-term costs for frequent makers.
Why This Tool Is Useful
Calculating soap recipes by hand is prone to errors, which can result in lye-heavy soap that burns skin or oil-heavy soap that goes rancid. This tool automates the math, ensuring safety and consistency. It helps you scale recipes up or down easily without re-doing complex calculations, saving time and reducing waste. It is ideal for hobbyists looking to produce professional-quality soap for personal use or small sales.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a different oil instead of tallow?
This calculator is specifically tuned for tallow's SAP value. If you substitute oils (like olive or coconut), you must use the SAP value for that specific oil, as it varies significantly.
What happens if I add too much lye?
Too much lye results in a lye-heavy soap that is caustic and can cause chemical burns. It is unsafe for skin. Always double-check your measurements before mixing.
Why is my soap soft or oily?
Softness can be due to insufficient curing time. If it is oily, you may have added too much superfat or not mixed (trace) enough before pouring. Ensure your measurements are accurate.
Additional Guidance
For beginners, it is highly recommended to run a small test batch first (e.g., 250g oil weight) to get a feel for the process before making large quantities. Keep a dedicated notebook for your recipes and observations. If you plan to sell your soap, check your local regulations regarding labeling and safety testing.
